Join Iqua Colson and this stellar group of music greats for an inspired evening of original pieces for voice and string instruments. “Vocalist Iqua Colson... brought crisp intonation to some mournful melodic lines ...later during the explosive, uptempo penultimate movement, “Resilience,” she channeled the fiery sense of artistic expression ... an inventive solo of scat singing. It wasn’t supper-club-style scat, either — but an ingeniously shaped solo, concluding with some darting phrases that earned one of the night’s biggest rounds of applause.”The New York Times

Odean Pope
Odean grew up in jazz rich territory with other Philadelphia notables such as: John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Ray Bryant, Bill Barron, Kenny Barron, Archie Shepp, Jymie Merritt, Jimmy Garrison, Philly Joe Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. Coltrane chose Odean to replace him in Jimmy Smith’s Group when he left for New York to join Miles Davis. Although he was close to Coltrane and continues to revere his artistry, Odean was always searching for his own musical sound.
Reggie Workman
Early in his career, Workman worked in jazz groups led by Gigi Gryce, Donald Byrd, Duke Jordan and Booker Little. In 1961, Workman joined the John Coltrane Quartet, replacing Steve Davis. He was present for the saxophonist’s Live at the Village Vanguard sessions, and also recorded with a second bassist (Art Davis) on the 1961 album. Workman also played with James Moody, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann and Thelonious Monk. He has recorded with Archie Shepp, Lee Morgan and David Murray. Workman, with pianist Tommy Flanagan and drummer Joe Chambers, formed The Super Jazz Trio in 1978.
Hope you can make it to see these new stars on the horizon.

“PULLING” the concluding performance in the upcoming film Immortal: The Crusade of Reggie Workman as seen through the eyes of his daughter Ayana Workman. Live recording, free and open to the public. Hope to see you there. - RW
Join us on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30pm in St. Paul’s Chapel as legendary bassist Reggie Workman presents an evening of jazz performance, spoken word, and movement.
A woman pulls at a thick rope that creates a barrier between her and the rest of the world—and finds resilience and transcendence. Pulling was created by Workman in collaboration with actor Ayana Workman (Rustin, Jessica Jones) and directed by choreographer, writer, and poet Maya Milenovic Workman.
Reggie Workman is recognized as one of the most technically gifted American avant-garde jazz and hard-bop double bassists in history. A composer, jazz advocate, and educator extraordinaire, his musical style ranges from bop to post-bop and beyond. Although best known for his work with John Coltrane and Art Blakey, he has collaborated with a range of notable artists. Workman has received numerous awards and fellowships, including an NEA Jazz Master Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Doris Duke Impact Award.
New York City native Ayana Workman first acted professionally as Juliet in the Public Theatre’s Mobile Unit production of Romeo and Juliet. She buttressed her stage resume with roles in Hamlet, Macbeth, The Winter’s Tale, and Julius Caesar and performed internationally at the National Theatre in Slovenia and London’s legendary Globe Theatre. Her film work includes Rustin and Jessica Jones, Person of Interest. She is currently a producer of Reggie Workman: Immortal, a documentary about her father.
Maya Milenovic Workman is a writer, director, choreographer, and poet. Together with Reggie Workman, she created original works such as Synthesis, Abstractions, Frugal Meal, Garden of Earthly Delights, and numerous others. Workman collaborated with theatre director Tomaž Pandur in Scheherazade and Faust, and she wrote, filmed, and produced I Hear with My Eyes, Guernica Continuum, Virtual Truth, and Ophelia’s Ocean (for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship).
Note to attendees: This performance is being filmed for the forthcoming documentary Reggie Workman: Immortal. Your attendance constitutes your consent to be included in any filming, photographing, audio recording, or broadcast and for any other use in whole or in part, including publicity and promotion.

Saturday, October 19th, 2024 - BRIC JAZZ FEST 2024 | NIGHT 3
BRIC JazzFest Night 3, featuring Reggie Workman, Allysha Joy, Lakecia Benjamin & more!
Born from a vision of celebrating jazz’s richness and potential, BRIC JazzFest has become a Brooklyn institution. As Steve Pisano of Feast of Music declared after the inaugural event in 2015, “BRIC has established a new festival destined to become a fixture.” This October, we’ll reach a momentous milestone: the 10th annual BRIC JazzFest.
This year’s theme celebrates a decade of resilience, artistic growth, and genre-bending exploration. We champion the evolution of jazz, fostering opportunities for rising stars like Brandee Younger, who has transformed from a “young and new” harpist in 2015 to our esteemed 2024 Artist Curator. Her innovative and ever-expanding artistry embodies the spirit of the festival.
Just as BRIC JazzFest inaugurated the newly renovated BRIC House in 2015, it has become a cornerstone program, woven into the vibrant tapestry of Brooklyn’s cultural scene.
